TMD Headache Treatment
In Chicago and surrounding areas
The TMJ, or temporomandibular joint, is the joint that connects the lower jaw to the skull, and provides the range of motion necessary for chewing, talking, facial expressions, and the general mobility of the jaw.
These joints—there is one on each side of the jaw—are finely tuned and capable of a broad range of movement. As a result, the temporomandibular joint is prone to becoming misaligned through defect, injury, or other cause. This condition is called temporomandibular disorder, or TMD.
TMD is a serious condition that can result in a variety of problems, including:
- Uneven tooth wear
- Soreness and pain in the jaw
- Locking of the jaw
- Headaches
- Bruxism (tooth grinding)
- And other problems
A trained and experienced neuromuscular dentist can help you both prevent and treat temporomandibular disorder, which is why it is so important that you find a dentist who understands the issues.
For more information on how TMD is diagnosed, read our page on Neuromuscular Dentistry and TMD Diagnosis.
Prevention
The first step, and an important one for any dental patient, is to prevent TMD from developing in the first place.
While many cases of TMD arise through natural defect or injury, many others come about as a result of poorly planned dental work. Even a procedure as simple as a filling or dental veneers has the potential to throw the jaw out of alignment.
Treatment
In preexisting cases of TMD, it is possible to treat or even cure the condition through restorative dentistry and use of night guards to prevent bruxism, or tooth grinding, during sleep.
