Soft Tissue Laser Recontouring

In Chicago and surrounding areas

The Colonial Dental Group provides its patients the most advanced cosmetic dentistry procedures and is equipped with some of the most innovative technologies. One of the most modern cosmetic dentistry procedures we perform is soft tissue laser dentistry. Laser dentistry uses light energy to perform procedures. We use the SiroLaser, which is the leading soft tissue laser available today. Using short controlled bursts of light that are not detectable by the human nervous system, SiroLaser allows cosmetic dentists to carry out otherwise painful surgeries with much less pain. We prefer SiroLaser because of the precise control it offers and the comfort it provides the patient.

Gum Re-contouring
One of the cosmetic dentistry procedures we perform with the SiroLaser is gum re-contouring. Healthy, well-contoured, pink gum tissue compliments and frames your teeth. Gum tissue that is red and swollen and unsymmetrical in appearance detracts from teeth that are otherwise healthy. In order to make your gums healthy, your gum tissue has to be restored to a healthy state. Inflammation must be reduced to get the gum tissue tight and pink. After this is achieved, we will evaluate the contours of the gum tissue. Gum tissue should be symmetrically draped around each tooth.

A very common problem is asymmetrical gum tissue. By this, we mean that the gingival margins (edges of gum tissue) are not at an aesthetic position. The gum tissue may be lower on one front tooth and not the other creating the appearance that one tooth is longer than the other. Another problem could be that the gingival margins of all the teeth are at the same height or the teeth appear to be short. Some people complain of a "gummy smile," meaning when they smile, they show too much gum tissue.

Gum Lifts
A simple cosmetic gum lift involves surgically contouring the gum tissue to a more aesthetically balanced appearance. This is performed using the laser and a topical anesthetic. The gum tissue heals very quickly, and the patient experiences very little, if any, discomfort. Many patients appreciate that there are no needles involved with this procedure.

However, there are times when contouring the tissue alone is not enough; sometimes, the bone at the front of the tooth may have to be reduced. If the bone is not reduced, the tissue will just grow back. This procedure is a bit more advanced than the simple gum lift but is still relatively comfortable for the patient.

Advantages of SiroLaser
There are many advantages to using the SiroLaser for these procedures. Because of the precision of the instrument, even a very small amount of tissue can be removed, and recovery from soft tissue laser dentistry is much easier because the laser simultaneously cauterizes tissue as it vaporizes other tissue. Also, anesthetics are rarely needed using the SiroLaser.

The re-contouring of gums using the SiroLaser is a simple procedure that can make a world of difference in the quality of your smile.
