Porcelain Veneers
The thought of spending 18 to 24 months with a mouth full of metal bands and wire is unappealing to most adults. If your teeth have relatively minor crookedness or misalignment in the front, porcelain veneers. The skilled cosmetic dentist applies veneers to misaligned or rotated teeth for virtually instant orthodontics.
At the Colonial Dental Clinic, our skilled cosmetic dentists can reinvent your smile with same day, porcelain restorations.
Indications
Mild and moderately crooked teeth can be made to look straight using thin restorations called porcelain veneers. Straightening front teeth in the smile line is the primary goal for instant orthodontics. Problems with molars, severe misalignment, and rotation are often referred out to an orthodontist. Most restorations are performed on a healthy mouth with no tooth decay or gum disease present.
Process
The process used is dependent on the material chosen to resurface your teeth. There are two options available, composite resin and porcelain veneers. Before either process, the dentist prepares the tooth to receive the new surface material. The tooth enamel is scored and trimmed to present a rough surface to which the veneer is bonded.
Composite resin
The color of the resin is first decided upon, it may be slightly brighter if several teeth will be resurfaced, or may be matched to the surrounding teeth in order to blend in. This clear plastic coating is applied in successive layers and dried between each coat using a special, high-intensity light.
When the resin is built up to adequate volume, the dentist shapes the composite into the desired facade. Using composite resin, teeth can also be lengthened, gaps filled, and the surface of the tooth turned to face the proper direction.
Composite resin is less expensive than porcelain, but it is also porous and may stain if not properly tended.
Porcelain veneers
Once the color of the porcelain stain and bonding material are decided, the dentist makes an impression of the tooth. In cosmetic dentist offices, this process takes at least two visits, but the Colonial Dental Group has a CEREC fabrication system that allows them to create porcelain restorations in the office, requiring only one visit in most cases. Once the veneer is created, it is permanently bonded to the tooth.
During fabrication, the dentist can make the veneer any length, can cheat it to one side or another to close gaps, or build up the veneer on one side to build up a rotated tooth. With the CEREC fabrication system, this process truly is instant orthodontia.
The final results, from just a few hours in the dental office, are a completely new straight set of teeth. Using these processes, the skilled cosmetic dentist cannot only straighten crooked teeth; he or she can improve your smile and your looks.
