Gum Treatment
No matter how well your teeth are maintained, without healthy gums, they’re at risk.
Gum disease is the second most common cause of dental problems after cavities. Depending on the type and severity of gum problem, it can cause the following problems and others:
- Tooth loss
- Bleeding gums
- Loose teeth
- Bad breath
- Soreness
At Colonial Dental Group, we encourage our patients to take their gum health seriously, so you can maintain your smile for a lifetime.
We offer a variety of procedures to help our patients restore and maintain their gum health.
As always, our first line of defense is proper diagnosis and maintenance of gum health. With prompt treatment, gum diseases can often be prevented or even reversed.
If we do find gum disease, depending on its severity, we may recommend one or more of the following procedures to halt its spread:
Scaling and Root Planing
This is a procedure in which we remove accumulated tartar and plaque from the teeth immediately under the gums and may take a series of visits to accomplish the desired results. If your periodontal problems are more severe we may recommend you see a periodontal dentist for an evaluation.
Gum Surgery
If your gum disease is more advanced, we may recommend a more extensive cleaning, requiring minor oral surgery. In this procedure, the gum is lifted from the tooth, and the area is cleaned, as in the root scale and plane procedure.
Bone Grafting
In very severe cases of gum disease, may be required to replace bone lost as a result of the condition of the gums. In these cases, we may use either a synthetic material, or bone from a donor site on your body.
