Pediatric Dentistry Questions

What are the unique considerations in pediatric dentistry?
Children are different from adults in many ways. Children often require more patience and more reassurance during their dental visits. Children's teeth are different from adults', too. For these and other reasons, it is important that your child visit a dentist who has experience working with children and attending to their unique needs.

When should my child first visit a dentist?
Children should have their first dentist visit two and half to three years old. This will provide the opportunity for early intervention into any developing problems, and help to establish a solid foundation of good dental health for life.

What can I do to alleviate my child's fear of the dentist?
As a parent, ensure that you don't project any of your own fears of dental visits to your child. Beyond that, be careful to choose a dentist who has experience with pediatric dentistry. He or she will help your child understand the procedures by showing the child the tools and explaining their purpose, and by working slowly and patiently with your child, to ensure that his or her early memories of dental visits aren't frightening and confusing. When your child is ready to come, the can sit and watch the visit. This is a nice way to introduce your child to the office.

What pediatric dentist should I choose?
When choosing a dentist for your child, it is important to find a dentist who has worked with children before, and who has the patience and understanding to ensure that your child is not traumatized by his or her visits. Unfortunately, all too many adults still carry with them traumatic memories of the dentist, which can actually cause them to avoid dentists. Choosing the right pediatric dentist can help your child establish good dental habits early in life. If your child needs extra attention, we will refer you to a more suitable specialist to ensure they receive the best treatment possible.
