Bruxism

In Chicago and surrounding areas

Bruxism is the term that refers to an incessant but unintentional grinding and clenching of the teeth at inappropriate times. People with bruxism (called bruxers) are often unaware that they even have this habit and often do not know that treatment is available until damage is already done. Damage caused by bruxism can include the following:

  • Abraded teeth
  • Oversensitive teeth
  • Facial pain
  • Headaches
  • Jaw dislocation
  • Damage to tooth enamel
  • Popping and clicking noises of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ)
  • Damage to the inside of the cheek and/or tongue

Causes and Diagnosis
Although this damaging habit is painful, oral health specialists often point to excessive levels of stress and certain personality types as typical causes of bruxism. People with nervous tension and people with aggressive, hurried and competitive natures often clench and grind their teeth frequently without even being aware that they are doing it.

The treatment plan determined by your dentist will depend on factors including your age and overall health, medical history, extent of bruxism, your tolerance for specific treatments, and your personal preference for treatment.

Treatment options may include:

  • Behavior modification
  • Mouthpiece
  • Adjustment of bite
  • Dental guard (splint, appliance, mouthpiece)

Teeth damaged by bruxism can sometimes be repaired by replacing the worn natural crown of the tooth with a porcelain crown. To protect the new crowns, an occlusal splint (dental guard) may be made for you to wear at night.

If you feel you may suffer from bruxism and would like to know what you can do about this damaging habit, please email or call the professionals at Colonial Dental Group today to schedule your personal consultation.
